Almost every part of the world, including our homeland, is now feeling the impacts of global warming—from unpredictable climate conditions to frequent extreme weather events. As everyone worries about its worsening effect, Select VoiceCom took a big step to help save the planet. On March 25, 2023, SVC partnered with the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation for a mangrove planting initiative in CotCot, Liloan.

In celebration of Earth Hour, SVC volunteers planted over 200 mangrove seedlings in the area. These seeds could later help restore the health of the planet’s lands, seas, and climate. Our volunteers also spearheaded a coastal cleanup drive to dispose of litter that could pollute the ocean and harm marine life. The success of this Project 15 program was made possible by our employees and other volunteers, who have a big heart for the environment.

The Power of Mangroves

A mangrove is a coastal tree that often lives in saltwater environments. A mangrove forest is often referred to as the "rainforest of the sea," and provides numerous ecosystem functions that support fisheries, storm protection, and more.

Its dense root system provides hiding places for small animals and nursery habitats for many fish, shellfish, and crustaceans and prevents erosion by trapping sediment in their tangled roots. This makes them important during storms as they break up the wave’s impact in storm surges.

SVC saw the importance of preserving this coastal ecosystem, so volunteers planted more seedlings in hopes of growing more mangrove trees in Liloan since it’s a coastal area that’s vulnerable to natural disasters like typhoons and storm surges. Although the maturation period may take 20 to 30 years and may not be seen instantly, these seedlings hold the promise of one day growing into strong mangroves.

Cleaning Up for Cleaner Coasts and Trash-Free Oceans

Plastic items can stay in the oceans for hundreds of years, and when they break down into microplastics, they can harm marine life. To protect the ocean from pollution, SVC volunteers put all hands on deck to collect all plastic and other trash on the coastline. One thing that they realized during this humbling experience is that we’re all responsible for taking care of our environment, be it on land or water. In our little ways, we can make a big difference!

Project 15: Growing Together

This Project 15 initiative was not just about planting mangroves. It’s more about creating a selfless community that truly cares about the environment. SVC believes that by taking small steps, like planting trees and cleaning up the shores, we can help preserve the beauty and diversity of our environment for more generations to come. By doing these activities, the volunteers hoped to encourage everyone to join SVC in creating a better future for all.
