To mark International Women’s Day, Select VoiceCom (SVC) proudly hosted “Women for the Earth: A Mangrove Planting with CCENRO”—an initiative that highlights both environmental stewardship and women’s empowerment. The event took place at a designated mangrove site in partnership with the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO), reinforcing SVC’s dedication to corporate social responsibility and sustainability.

A Purpose-Driven Initiative

As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental preservation, SVC spearheaded this all-women volunteer effort, where 15 dedicated employees planted a total of 500 mangrove seedlings. The initiative is more than just a tree-planting activity—it is a testament to the strength and resilience of women in driving meaningful change, both in the workplace and in the community.

Why Mangrove Planting?

Mangroves are not just trees—they are lifelines for coastal communities. These resilient ecosystems act as nature’s defense against extreme weather events, absorbing storm surges and preventing shoreline erosion. With the Philippines experiencing an average of 20 typhoons annually, of which around eight to nine make landfall, the need to fortify our coasts has never been more urgent. (PAGASA)

Cebu, while spared from frequent direct hits, still endures about 138 days of rainfall annually, making its coastal areas vulnerable to the slow but steady impact of climate change. (Environmental Impact Assessment) This reality makes mangrove rehabilitation efforts essential, not just for environmental sustainability but also for the resilience of local communities.

The Philippines is uniquely positioned to lead in mangrove conservation. The country is home to at least 50% of the world’s 65 mangrove species, making it a biodiversity hotspot. (ResearchGate) However, despite the abundance of these species, the survival rate of planted mangroves remains critically low, ranging between 10–20%. (ResearchGate) Ensuring that these seedlings take root and thrive requires proper site selection, ongoing maintenance, and community involvement.

By organizing Women for the Earth: A Mangrove Planting with CCENRO, SVC is taking proactive steps to contribute to this vital cause. Mangroves are naturally suited to the Philippine climate (Climate Change Commission), and by planting 500 seedlings, SVC’s volunteers are helping to restore coastal resilience, improve biodiversity, and support local conservation efforts.

This initiative is more than just planting trees—it is about creating a legacy of environmental responsibility and community empowerment that future generations will benefit from.

Mangroves play a critical role in protecting coastal ecosystems. These trees serve as natural barriers against erosion, storm surges, and rising sea levels while also providing a thriving habitat for marine biodiversity. By partnering with CCENRO, SVC ensures that its environmental efforts contribute to Cebu City’s larger mission of preserving forests, watersheds, tree parks, and greenbelts for future generations.

Impact and Insights from Participants

SVC employees who participated in the event expressed deep fulfillment in taking part in this meaningful cause.

“It’s a fulfilling feeling for a woman to be able to participate in this kind of activity and contribute to the betterment of the environment.” – Grace, Campaign Manager

Meanwhile, a CCENRO representative emphasized the importance of mangroves in maintaining ecological balance and thanked SVC for its commitment:

“We are grateful to our women volunteers from SVC for participating in our environmental stewardship, specifically in mangrove planting, to help shape our environment and protect future generations.”
